Burgundy Taffeta Robe à la Polonaise and Petticoat, ca. 1775 - A Dance of Detail and Drama
This striking Robe à la Polonaise from circa 1775 is crafted from rich burgundy taffeta, reflecting the theatrical flair and refinement of late 18th-century fashion. The rear bodice features two central back panels, while the closed front and sides are cut in one continuous piece, creating a smooth silhouette accented by pleated, pinked furbelows that cascade with playful elegance.
Narrow sleeves are designed with curved elbow openings and shaped folded-back cuffs, each adorned with matching trims that echo the gown’s ornate character. The sleeves are further enhanced by 18th-century lace cuffs, lending the ensemble a delicate flourish of historical authenticity. The skirt is pleated into knife folds at the pointed rear waist, providing structure and fullness, while Polonaise tapes positioned at intervals lend dynamic volume when gathered. The hem is finished with its original fine ivory silk-lined edging - a rare surviving detail that speaks to the garment’s exquisite provenance. The accompanying petticoat, made of lustrous green silk, adds contrast and richness. It is decorated with ornamental ribbons and hanging tassels, evoking both movement and opulence. Bust approx. 81 cm (32 inches).
Provenance: From an elaborate English collection, this ensemble captures the artistry and expressive silhouette of Georgian fashion, preserving its legacy in texture and trim.
